July 6-12, Anchorage & Ninilchik AK

Eagle River State Park was 10 miles outside Anchorage & beautiful. We decided the buddy system would be in order after finding "bear evidence" on the trail by the river. Mom flew in very early on July 8th to spend 2 weeks with us! Surprisingly, no jet lag, so we headed out sightseeing after a few hours sleep. We watched Ulu knives & bowls being made and wandered around downtown Anchorage. We are amazed by all the beautiful flowers in gardens and in baskets around town. They really celebrate the growing season here! Since the weather was good, we booked a flight seeing trip to Mt McKinley. What a treat! Our pilot was great and we were able to see the top 2/3 of the mountain above the clouds. It was all breathtaking blue skies & white snow. We then dipped below the clouds and were able to see the glaciers, moose & bears. We had a yummy late dinner of seafood chowder in bread bowls at a restaurant that Mom remembered when she & Dad were here on a cruise. Our weather was decent again & still no jet lag, so the next day we drove down the shore from Anchorage to the Alyeska Resort in Girdwood. We stopped at all the scenic viewpoints along the Cook Inlet. Some are part of the state park system and are really nicely done. We rode the tram at Alyeska and got a beautiful view of mountains, glaciers and the inlet. Dennis was attacked by a bear outside the gift shop. Barb's coupon book was again in use & led us to a great burger joint in Girdwood. Still using coupons, we then went to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. We saw moose, bears, caribou, bison, elk, owls and a bald eagle with only one wing. The center takes in injured or orphaned animals. Most are rehabilitated and reintroduced to the wild, but Adonis the eagle has been there since 1995 and can't ever leave. The bear attacks continued, this time Barb was the victim. Also included is the unedited photo. It was a bit of a surprise when the bear stood up directly in front of her. Scenic View RV Park in Ninilchik was our next stop & one of our favorite parks yet. It's nothing fancy, but the sites are on a bluff & tiered so everyone has a great view. Owners Bob & Brenda welcomed us with smoked salmon & razor clam chowder. They also built a roaring campfire at night, where Bob brought over even more freshly smoked salmon. We were able to buy some from him so we can enjoy it even longer. The drive down the Kenai Peninsula to Ninilchik was pretty. We also drove down to Homer, our next destination, to check out RV parks. Good thing we did - those we thought we'd like, we really didn't. Dennis also did some recon on the location of his upcoming fishing charter & got his license. We stopped in Anchor Point to take our pictures in front of the sign showing the westernmost point you can drive to in the US. We had lunch at Boss Hoggz burger place & were commenting that the Man vs Food guy should go there when the ladies at the next table told us he had. We had reasonably sized & very tasty burgers. We were looking forward to another campfire, but the fog and misty rain moved in. Oh well, guess we can't have perfect weather everyday! We were able to buy smoked & fresh salmon from Bob before we left.
