July 12-15, Homer AK

Big driving day - we moved 35 miles to Homer! It was foggy when we left Ninilchik, but it quickly lifted and we immediately started enjoying our mountain, glacier & volcano view from the Homer Spit. As with all beach campgrounds, we were packed in like sardines but we were lucky to get the end space so our windshield and all our driver side windows face the views. It's hard to go to bed with so much to look at. Dennis did some mighty fine driving (as always) to get us situated. The tide was in when we arrived & a mini Homer Spit appeared when it went out a couple hours later. This is shallow water. We can see otters playing right in front of the RV and eagles (bald & golden) fly all around. Louise & Barb did some souvenir shopping, including the Time Bandit store, while Dennis recovered from his long drive! The Spit is about a 50/50 mix of tourism & commerce. It was fun to see all the oversized marine & fishing equipment. We had gotten some fresh sockeye salmon fillets from Bob at Scenic View RV, so we did some cedar plank cooking & immediately decided to pick up more when we drive back by on Friday. Several kite surfers came by, but one in particular caught our attention. He must have surfed completely around the 4.5 mile Spit & then started over again. His dog followed him the whole time, probably wondering what his crazy person was up to! We drove to Land's End around 10pm (broad daylight) to watch people fish. Several were fishing, but only one guy was catching. This got Dennis excited for his fishing trip the next day. Jeff & Aggie made a marathon drive down from Denali to join up with us for little more than a day. Jeff & Dennis went halibut fishing while Aggie, Louise & Barb toured the town, shopped & went to a winery. The girls followed an eagle around town & Aggie got too close :), but got these great pictures. This eagle swooped into a fish cleaning station & grabbed what he wanted off the table! The men brought home some of the catch (the rest was flash frozen) and we had a feast of halibut & salmon - soooooo gooooooood! The tide on our final full day in Homer had extreme highs & lows. The park owner warned us it might come over the rocks in front of our site. It didn't, but 3-4 foot curls were breaking into them at 3am. We figure the road is about 20 feet above sea level, so there's not much room for a storm surge. Before all the tidal excitement, however, we were invited to dinner with Dennis' cousin Gloria. Unfortunately, her husband Russ was out of town but Gloria is a fantastic host. The view was great and the dinner was even better. We had roast chicken & veggies, sourdough sauce, salad from her garden, the best wild rice dish ever & rhubarb crisp. We were also entertained by a baby swallow who found himself on the deck while all his siblings were still up in the nest. He wandered around looking quite confused for our entire visit but Gloria sent a follow up email that he disappeared shortly thereafter & that she assumed he was happily heading south. Dennis made the mistake of asking "Have you seen everything you wanted to see to see in Homer?" before going to bed. Barb consulted her list & quickly realized we had forgotten to go to the Salty Dawg, so off we went. We had a drink and met some funny people, including a very tipsy Aussie in a pink camo sweatshirt. The full moon was coming up over the mountains as we came out & we saw a Holland America cruise ship coming into harbor. Ships don't normally come to Homer, so we looked up the itinerary & saw they also go to Kodiak to see bears. Interesting! We saw a nesting eagle with 2 chicks as we left Homer. The weather was clearer back at Scenic View RV Park than the days we stayed there & the views of the volcanoes across the inlet was breathtaking.
