July 15-18, Soldotna & Cooper Landing AK
We checked into the Klondike RV Park in Soldotna for a quick overnight stay. It was by far the nicest park in the area. We took the Jeep to Kenai to watch dip netters since it was the first (or second) day of the sockeye salmon run there. Apparently the salmon didn't get the schedule because there were a whole bunch of fisherman just standing with their nets in the water. If all had gone according to plan, we would have seen them flip the nets over once a fish swam in. Never happened... moving along... We saw some interesting buildings in Old Kenai & continued up the coast. Dennis remembered seeing oil rigs out in the Cook Inlet when he was here on his motorcycle trip. They were located after a few "scenic detours". It looked like there were some small refining facilities too, so why is fuel so expensive here?? We also found a beach and could see Mt Spurr (near Anchorage) and possibly McKinley too. This building will be a combo coffee shop & tattoo parlor, but we were more fascinated by the construction. The logs were stripped, split and cut into small pieces, then stacked with cement. Bottles were inset in decorative patterns. We'd really like to see it completed! A mom & baby moose greeted us along the road on the way home. Mama looks like she's having a bad hair day! We stopped to see the wooden carousel with all Alaskan animals in Soldotna. Saw Fest was also going on & it was interesting to watch the chainsaw carvers in action. Sadly, we must report yet ANOTHER bear attack! After all the excitement, Dennis had to find a place to sit down. Our next stop was the Kenai Princess Lodge & RV Park. Mom's room is bigger than the RV, so we're sure she enjoyed having a little space and privacy for 2 days. Dennis & Barb stayed here while on the Alaska cruise years ago and it was a favorite. Little has changed and it was as nice as we remembered it to be. The gift shop had a great deal on jackets, which are hard to find in AZ and we will need for our upcoming glacier cruise. We enjoyed happy hour on the lodge deck and enjoyed watching a sunbathing squirrel. We cooked some more fresh halibut for dinner, which leads to halibut tacos for lunch the next day! Our second day was spent relaxing and catching up on some chores. Dennis washed the Homer salt spray off the RV while Barb did some laundry. Mom relaxed in front of her room's fireplace and treated us to a great dinner at the lodge's restaurant. And then, we're off again! So much to see and so few days!
