June 8-10, Dease Lake BC & Watson Lake YT
Let us tell you a little more about Meziadin Lake. Although beautiful, it was a mosquito nightmare. It felt like something out of a horror movie. Everyone knows that Barb can be highly "flappable" when it comes to bugs, but even the unflappable Dennis wondered what we had gotten into. We killed more than 100 mosquitoes inside the RV. The best place to corral them was the shower, with the skylight above it, and it looked like a crime scene each morning. Thought about taking a picture, but we'd rather just try to forget! We never could figure out how they were getting in & we got very little sleep. So, that's the downside. We were happy to find that Dease Lake RV Park was away from the lake and bug free. On the way, a sassy bear slowly crossed the road in front of the RV, staring us down the whole time. We also spotted our first moose! Dennis met our next door neighbor Dennis who gave us a can of flying insect killer. That took care of the last of the little devils who had escaped the swatter. We feel like we have a new lease on life! We spent the day cleaning swatted mosquitoes off everything, doing laundry, slept well and continued north into Yukon Territory. There was a quick stop at Jade City before we left BC. It was interesting to see the large jade boulders and some cutting & polishing equipment. Apparently 90% of the world's jade now comes from this area. We would have thought China, but they depleted their resources and now must import it. A small souvenir for the RV curio cabinet & a gift for our favorite girl made it out the door with us. We drove through an ongoing forest fire. The road had been shut down for a day and then open on a limited basis until 2 days before we came through, so we were monitoring the situation. Not that we had an alternative route... We've been hearing about the AZ wildfires & it was heartbreaking to see such devastation and know it was also happening at home. Our bearnanza continues - will stop reporting on bears unless they are particularly entertaining. We arrived in Watson Lake and had a very busy afternoon. The visitor center had a great movie on the building of the Alaska Hwy. We spent about an hour walking through the Sign Post Forest, looking for places we recognized. A homesick soldier working on the Alaska Hwy started this in 1942 and it now has more than 71,000 signs. Then, we went to the Northern Lights Center to watch 2 movies projected onto their domed ceiling - one on astronauts preparing for flight and one on the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). We won't be able to see them while we're here, so this was the next best option. Today's driving discussion centered on mosquitoes: Does one blood type taste better than others? Do heavy people taste different than thin? They seem to bite our bony wrists and ankles the most, so maybe we should hire a herd of supermodels to hang out with us. OK, enough of that! For those of you who have been wondering, this photo was taken at 12:15 AM. Thank goodness for our day/night shades!

Our boys will be so jealous you saw a moose - they looked everywhere on our trip to Alaska - yes that was a long time ago - but they still would love to see a real one!!
