August 14-16, Liard Hot Springs & Toad River BC

First off, yes, the correct spelling is Liard. We stayed at the Liard Hot Springs Provincial Park, which was gorgeous. Our camping fee included use of the hot springs, but there was construction and a sulfur smell, so we walked down to them but didn't partake. It didn't matter, the area was beautiful. And, we saw bears and bison (including one scratching his behind) on the way in, which made it even better. It took us 3 hours the next day for the 72 mile move to Toad River Lodge & RV Park! We crossed the Canadian Rockies and could try to blame it on the road, but in reality is was all the wildlife and views that kept us creeping along. There was a fresh dusting of snow on several of the mountaintops. We saw a herd of bison, including lots of little ones. Dennis guessed one had just been born in the past day or so. It was still wobbly and mama kept us from getting a good picture. We also added goats and moose to the mix today. We noticed the goats were licking the ground next to the road and learned a little later that they are getting salt from it. None of the animals were terribly worried about the big white box next to them on the road, and we were glad that none of them decided to charge us. We hit 6 miles of road construction today, but it was no problem. The flagman was a 16 yr old from Terrace BC, near Prince Rupert. We went through there 2 months ago and were a little disappointed when we realized we'd forgotten to look for the white Kermodei bears. We mentioned this to him and he let us know that his mother has lived there her whole life and only saw one last year and he has never seen one. Guess we're glad we didn't try to stick around for that! We are camped on a pond that has regular moose sightings, but none have appeared just yet. We are surrounded by a recently harvested hay field, Toad River, and Folded Mountain. The pictures don't quite do the mountain justice.
