August 27-29, Calgary and Waterton National Park AB
Calgary was a quick stop, though it looks like we could spend more time there. We went to the Calgary Tower downtown, where we stood on a glass floor 525 feet in the air. It was a strange sensation. It was fun to watch the reactions of each new person who came off the elevator when they first saw the glass floor. Several grabbed the handrail as they stepped on it, but we didn’t think that would be of much use if the floor gave way. Our arrival in Calgary was timed so we could attend the finale of Global Fest, an international fireworks competition that had gone on all week. We heard attendance would be 22,000 people and figured that was for the week. Now we think the count was for that night only. We couldn’t find parking anywhere and figured it would take 2 hours or more to take the shuttle back at the end of the night. Dennis will be looking into hip replacement when we get home, so a long walk after so much hiking in the parks was out of the question. We were disappointed that we would miss out on the chance to taste different foods for dinner, but we drove around until we found a good spot to watch the fireworks. It was a spectacular display, preceded by a great sunset. We stopped at Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump on our way to our final national park. Although the subject is rather gruesome, this is a great visitor center. It is 7 stories tall, but tucked into the cliff in such a way that you barely see it from the road. We learned that the Blackfeet Indians spent months moving the buffalo herd along, separating out just as many as they needed and then waiting for just the right conditions to chase them in a stampede over the cliff. This method of hunting was used up to 6,000 years ago. The name doesn’t come from the buffalo, but from a young boy who wanted to see the buffalo fall and stood below the cliff. He was found beneath the pile of buffalo. Cheery, huh? We were happy to see a herd of buffalo standing safely on flat ground as we left. We used our park pass one more time for our stay at Waterton NP. We were just here overnight, so saw all the sights we could, including several lakes and the Prince of Wales Hotel. The deer in this park are incredibly tame. We saw several fawns who were so young they still had their spots. It seems like they should be further along with winter weather coming soon.
