July 17-19 - Appleton, WI
Our trip with Mom wrapped up with a visit to the Appleton area to see Barb's childhood friends Stacey, Julie & Brad - aka The Dougli. Don & Dena Douglas (the parents) live near us all in AZ, but the kids have all stayed in WI. Mom was welcomed with an unusual event in the campground when it flooded. Rumor on the street was that we received 4 inches of rain in 2 hours. Also, a large culvert became plugged with debris so all the neighboring golf course runoff drained into our RV park. No damage, but we did have to take off our shoes to get to the Jeep! Dennis enjoyed wading through all the water to discuss the flood with the neighbors. Stacey & her husband Jeff invited us to their house our first evening for brats & we enjoyed the view of the creek on their property. Their twins Preston & Payson hung out with the adults for awhile but eventually decided games were more fun. We drove to Door County the next day & loaded up on great raspberries, strawberries & cherries. Mom had a regular produce stand in the backseat with her. Yum! Julie had us over to her house that night for another great meal. Her dog Bruiser allowed us to throw his ball to him over & over & over & over again. Our final day was a driving trip around the Appleton area. We followed the Fox River & stopped at the Paper Hall of Fame where we were able to make our own sheets of paper. We met Brad & Cathy & their kids Taylor & Wyatt at their home that evening & then met everyone else at a restaurant for Friday Fish. If you are ever in WI, this is a must-eat. We had a great time seeing everyone again. Dennis took off in the RV for the first campground in the trip we won & Barb took Mom to Milwaukee so she could return to real life. We loved having her with us & are trying to talk her into meeting up with us again.
