May 25-June 4 - Oklahoma to Colorado Springs

We stayed in Elk City, OK & Dodge City, KS on our way to Colorado. Toured Dodge City, but found no signs of Matt Dillon or Festus. Turns out they may just be fictional characters! The winds left Barb wondering how our vinyl-covered styrofoam box would fare. Luckily, they were never strong enough to really worry about. Although we did see a storm chaser on our drive into Kansas.
We found a great campground in Colorado Springs. Mountaindale RV park had a Saturday bingo special. Dennis won 2 out of 5 games for an $11 profit! Bingo was followed up with a $1 ice cream social. Woo wee - big day! We hiked up the hill behind the park everyday, so that should atone for some of the ice cream. We saw deer on the hill some days & virtually every night in the campground. They're pretty tame. When we weren't enjoying the campground, we discovered there are so many things to do in the area. We drove up Pikes Peak with its 14,110 ft elevation! We saw snow & frozen lakes near the top. We also visited the US Olympic training center. The film & tour were quite interesting. There seemed to be a lot of athletes in residence, which makes sense with Beijing just 2 months away. Garden of the Gods was an unexpected treat. We had pretty much decided not to go, but reconsidered on the recommendation of our friend Barb. Boy, we're glad we listened to her. The landscape is incredible & our weather was interesting. We had everything from warm & sunny to cool & slushy hail. Fun for desert dwellers! Driving tours took us through Manitou Springs, by the Broadmoor hotel (wish our golf course looked so pretty!) & up a dirt road that would have taken us all the way to Cripple Creek. We got as close as we could to NORAD on Cheyenne Mountain without getting arrested. Our final day in Colorado Springs was a busy one. Our daily hike up the hill was followed by an afternoon trip to the movies to see "Sex and the City" - poor Dennis. But his day improved when we went to Seven Falls. We climbed the 224 steps to the top of the falls & then took a short hike up the creek to see another small waterfall. We stuck around until after dark to see the falls all lit up. Really pretty. We really enjoyed Colorado Springs & look forward to a return trip.
